What a Ride! 25 years later...

Mark H. BurtonMark H. Burton
M.S., Computer Science
Class of 1982

Job Title:
Systems Engineer

Company:
General Dynamics C4 Systems

Mark Burton came to Tempe in August of 1980. He was a graduate student seeking a master’s degree in computer science before ASU offered graduate degrees in computer science.  As it was, Dr. William Lewis, a CSE professor at ASU, had a vision. Two years later, Mark graduated from ASU with a master’s degree in computer science.

That was 25 years ago and Mark is still using the skills that he acquired while at ASU.  Currently, he’s a systems engineer at General Dynamics C4 Systems located in Scottsdale, Arizona  “I remember the classes I took over 25 years ago from professors like Dr James Collofello,” Mark said, “I have seen Dr. Collofello take classroom concepts, and apply them to solve corporate challenges in software design and development.”  Mark started his engineering career with GTE Automatic Electric in 1982.  “GTE has been through a lot of changes since 1982 when I started.” He continued, “From 1982 through 2003, I experienced corporate name changes, joint ventures and I was laid off twice.”  Through it all, Mark remembers taking classes offered by his company and taught by Dr. James Collofello.

Mark started at General Dynamics C4 Systems in February of 2004.  He recognizes GDC4S’ commitment to keeping and developing their human assets. He noted that he is constantly challenged to develop new skills. GDC4S will also provide the financial support when Mark begins his graduate studies in the field of systems engineering.

“25 years ago a ‘geek’ from Virginia came to Tempe to enhance his skills, now I embark upon another journey with this great university,” Mark said, “Thanks to leaders like Jim Collefello and Bill Lewis, I look back and say, ‘What a Ride’.”
