Gireesh Rema started his career at Garmin International as a Software Engineer shortly after his 2002 graduation. Garmin is a leading provider of Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled products in the world. As a lead engineer, he is responsible for multiple GPS products.

Rema attributes a lot of his success in the workplace to the training he received at ASU. As a teaching assistant he worked with undergraduate students. This allowed him to improve his advising, public speaking and research skills.

Through the computer science curriculum, Rema learned multiple operating systems and programming languages. The different phases of software engineering including requirement gathering, development and testing were covered in great detail. “Professors like Dr. James Collofello, Dr. Partha Dasgupta and Dr. Wei-Tek Tsai used their real world experience to enhance the value of the computer science courses,” Rema said. “The opportunity to work in multicultural teams was invaluable.”

Rema received software engineering experience as an intern at Lucent Technologies. The ASU Corporate Leadership Program helped place him in this apprenticeship. “At the internship I applied my computer science skills to solve real world problems,” Rema said. He also credits ASU Career Services in helping him write a winning resume and for other job preparation techniques like mock interviews.

Rema said, “I attended the campus job fairs, got called for couple of job interviews and succeeded in getting an offer even before I graduated. I am very proud to be an ASU Computer Science alumnus.”
