Clinical Photography Analysis Internship

Ulthera Profile

Ulthera, Inc. develops novel therapeutic medical devices for the expanding aesthetic, cosmetic surgery and dermatology markets. The company is targeting the non-invasive face lift and facial rejuvenation market segment, which will exceed $4 B worldwide in 2010. Ulthera has developed a non-invasive approach to cosmetic treatments, utilizing ultrasound technology to firm, tighten and lift facial skin tissue. Human clinical trials are ongoing to refine protocols and optimize clinical outcomes.

Job Description

Ulthera is dedicated to a technical and methodical approach to identifying clinical efficacy of their product. The current method for determining clinical relevance and efficacy is by utilizing before and after photographs. These photographs are taken pre-treatment and at several intervals following treatment. For each photo to yield valid results a rigorous and methodical method of analyzing the photographs is used. This includes matching the photographs to each other and applying algorithms to correct for any misalignments. Once the photographs are aligned and matched, qualitative and quantitative measurements are taken and data analysis performed on the information obtained. These measurements are then used to determine the amount of clinical effect and duration of effect that is caused by using the Ulthera system, to ultimately refine usage protocols, optimize clinical outcomes and support the marketing of the product.

This position will require the individual to be dedicated and focused on producing accurate results on large volumes of data. The position also requires that the individual be continuously adding to the improvement and development of the Ulthera clinical results by developing and presenting new or improved ideas.

The primary function of this position is as follows:
- Collect photographs from various sites around the United States via networked connections and organize them on internal servers at Ulthera.
- Analyze the photographs using the current system by applying correction algorithms, matching, and photographic measurements.
- Compile, organize and present photographs for qualitative clinician assessments
- Analyze, draw conclusions and present information based on both the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the photographs
- Perform statistical analysis and error analysis on the measurement system and results

Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from the field of computer science engineering, biomedical engineering or bioinformatics
- Advanced computer skills and understanding
- Strong work ethics and near obsession for attention to detail
- An eye for or desire to develop and present new ideas/improvements in the area of photographic analysis and measurements for clinical results
- Ability to work proactively in a fairly loose and level tiered start-up company
