Undergraduate Advising

SCI Job Fair

The School of Computing and Informatics (SCI) Advising Center supports a broad range of advising and career development services for students. The center hosts a career workshops, hosts an SCI Job Fair each semester and plans employer information sessions and technical talks.

The SCI Advising Center serves both undergraduate and graduate students in both the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Informatics, as well as students interested in informatics certificates.

New undergraduate students are required to be advised their first two semesters before enrolling in classes. Students on probation or seniors needing to file a declaration of graduation form must also be advised prior to enrolling. Students are encouraged to make appointments well in advance. Students who are more than 10 minutes late to an appointment will need to reschedule.

CSE Graduate Application Deadlines

December 1, 2008: Deadline for Fall 2009 Graduate Applications

Students applying for the M.S. in Computer Science, Master of Computer Science, Ph.D. in Computer Science and Integrated Bachelor/M.S. degree in Computer Science should apply by this date.

Important Information

Capstone Course Sequence

Starting spring 2010, the capstone courses (CSE 423/424, CSE 461/462 and CSE 485/486) will only be offered once a year. For the spring 2009 and fall 2009 semesters, all capstone courses will be offered each term. However, starting spring 2010, only CSE 424, CSE 462 and CSE 486 will be offered (and thereafter every spring term) and in fall 2010, CSE 423, CSE 461 and CSE 485 (and thereafter every Fall term) will be offered.

Computer systems engineering students in CSE 220 in fall 2008 should take CSE 320, CSE 325, and CSE 360 in the spring 2009 term, to prepare for CSE 423 in fall 2009 and CSE 424 in spring 2010. Computer science students taking CSE 240 in Fall 2008 should take CSE 310 and CSE 360 in the spring 2009 term to prepare for CSE 485 in the fall 2009 term and CSE 486 in spring 2010.

Please plan your schedules accordingly, as no prerequisite overrides will be granted. Credit for either CSE 423, 461 or 485 and for either CSE 424, CSE 462 or CSE 486 is allowed.

Concurrent Degree Policy

Due to the similar requirements of the computer science and computer systems engineering degrees in earlier catalog years, students who are pursuing one of the degrees in the 2005-2006 and earlier catalog years are no longer able to add concurrent degrees in computer science and computer systems engineering.

Students on the 2006-2007 catalog year and later can petition the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering to add a concurrent degree in computer science and computer systems engineering once approved to take upper division coursework. Students will only be required to take one set of capstone courses and CSE 423 and CSE 424 are the recommended capstone courses. Students who are approved for concurrent computer science and computer systems engineering degrees can use CSE 320 and CSE 325 as CSE 400-level electives in the computer science degree. Students must take 12 hours of CSE technical electives for the computer systems engineering major that are not used toward the computer science degree requirements of CSE 400-level electives or technical electives.

CSE 320/CSE 325

For computer systems engineering students continuing on 2005-2006 or earlier curriculums who have not taken CSE 421 or CSE 422 (both 4 credits), they are replaced by CSE 325 and CSE 320 (both 3 credits). The two hour deficiency is added to the CSE Technical Elective section. Students needing only 1 hour have the option of completing CSE 301: Ethics for Computing, a one-credit hour course to fulfill this deficiency and have it counted as a technical elective.

ECE courses

Please note the changes to ECE courses for students remaining on 2005-2006 or earlier catalog years:

  • ECE 400: complete CSE 485: CS Capstone I, CSE 493 (honors students), or CSE 461 Software Engineering Capstone (for software concentration students)
  • ECE 300: complete CSE 424: CSE Capstone II, CSE 493 (honors students), or any upper division Literacy course
  • ECE 210: take extra three hours of technical electives

Students with questions should make an appointment with an advisor by calling 480.965.3199.

Grade replacement for Calculus courses

Students who have earned a “D” or “E” in MAT 270/271/272 courses will be able to replace their grade in the affected course by taking the three-credit hour math courses (MAT 294 Calculus for Engineers I, II or III in Fall 2006 or MAT 265, 266, 267). Please note that for students who have earned a “D” or “E” in either MAT 270, 271 or 272 who retake a three-credit hour math course, the one hour deficiency must be made up as a technical elective for students in the 2005-2006 and earlier catalogs. Contact the SCI Advising Center for more information.

Grade Replacement Policy Update – Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students admitted in Fall 2008 or Spring 2009 are permitted to repeat up to 12 hours of coursework at any class level. Both grades received in the course will be listed on the student’s transcript and only the highest grade received in the course will be included in the student’s cumulative GPA. For courses repeated beyond the 12 hour limit both grades received in the course will be listed on the student’s transcript and the average course grade will be included in the student’s cumulative GPA. This policy does not apply to students readmitted in Fall 2008 or Spring 2009. Students are not able to appeal the 12 credit hour rule.

For students admitted Spring 2008 or earlier, both grades received in the course will be listed on the student’s transcript for 100 and 200 level course repetitions and only the highest grade received in the course in the student’s GPA. For 300 and 400 level grade repetitions, both grades received in the course will be listed on the transcript and both grades received in the course will be counted in the student’s GPA.

Students can repeat courses in which a “D” or “E” grade is earned and cannot repeat courses in which a “C” or higher is earned. This policy can be reviewed at: http://www.asu.edu/aad/manuals/usi/usi203-06.html. If you have questions, please call the SCI Advising Center to schedule an appointment with an advisor.
