Integrated Bachelor/Master Degree Program

The School of Computing and Informatics offers an integrated B.S./M.S. or B.S.E./M.S. program for students currently admitted in the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or the Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering degree. This allows students to graduate with both degrees in five years of full-time course work.

Students interested in this program must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Students earning a B.S. in Computer Science can use nine credits of graduate course work and students earning B.S.E. in Computer Systems Engineering can use six credits of graduate coursework toward undergraduate degree requirements and graduate degree requirements.

The Master of Science in Computer Science is a research-oriented degree for students with undergraduate education in computer science or a related field. It provides advanced course work and emphasizes research by the students in areas such as embedded systems; information assurance and computer security; multimedia and the arts; database systems; algorithm design and analysis; computational biology; sensor and ad-hoc networks; data mining; information integration; optical networks; and computer aided-geometric design. Application to the M.S. degree is competitive.

Students applying to M.S. degree will need to submit:

International students have additional documents to submit.  Please review SCI’s Graduate application information.

Please contact an undergraduate advisor with questions about the integrated program, or before you apply to the program.  You can set up an appointment by contacting the SCI Advising Center at 480-965-3199 or at sci.advising@asu.edu.

Students in catalog years 2005-2006 and earlier are encouraged to contact the SCI Advising Center for more information on course planning.

*M.S. students are allowed to take a maximum of 12 hours of CSE 598 coursework (except for M.S. with a concentration in Arts, Media and Engineering students, who are not allowed to use any CSE 598 coursework).  M.S. students earning a concentration in Arts, Media and Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, or Information Assurance should meet with Martha Vander Berg, Graduate Advisor, to discuss a course plan.

**Computer Systems Engineering students must take CSE 340 and CSE 355 as CSE Technical Electives in order to meet graduate deficiencies.

Please review the complete Integrated Degree Requirements and Procedures and the M.S. Degree Requirements and Procedures and if you have any questions, contact the SCI Advising Center at (480) 965-3199 or by email at: sci.advising@asu.edu

Admitted Students

Students will be considered undergraduates until all B.S. or B.S.E. degree requirements have been completed. Undergraduate students accepted into the Integrated program will be eligible for graduate-level courses and seminars. Students must petition the Graduate College to be approved to reserve graduate courses for the Integrated program.  Students must fill out the “Petition to Graduate College” form. On the form, students must state “I have been admitted to the Integrated Bachelor/Master program in the School of Computing and Informatics.  I would like to reserve CSE 5xx <CLASS NAME> toward my M.S. program”.  The form can then be turned into the SCI Advising Center for processing.  Upon approval by the Graduate College, the Graduate Advisor will issue a prerequisite override to enroll in the course(s).

Upon receipt of the B.S. or the B.S.E. degree, the status of the student will change from undergraduate to graduate, which means the student will be eligible for graduate research assistantships and related health insurance and tuition waivers, if hired by a faculty member.  Students must notify the Graduate Advisor regarding their graduation.

Upon admission to the Integrated program, the student should identify a faculty member as advisor and in consultation with the advisor develop an integrated program of study (POS) leading to the dual degrees.  By the end of the second semester in the program, the student should also form a supervisory committee that will serve as the Master’s Thesis Committee. Please follow the guidelines outlined on the website pertaining to the M.S. program of study.

Maintaining Good Academic Standing in Integrated Program

Satisfactory progress in the integrated program is achieved if the student maintains a 3.00 GPA both in overall undergraduate coursework and in the student’s approved M.S. program of study AND a grade ‘C’ or above in each course.

A student may be recommended for dismissal to the Graduate College from the M.S. portion of the integrated program and be returned to the undergraduate-only status in the B.S. or B.S.E. if
the student does not complete all requirements for the bachelor’s (B.S./B.S.E) degree within one year of being admitted to the integrated program (without prior approval of his/her faculty advisor and supervisory committee) or does not maintain a 3.0 GPA.

The student may drop out of the integrated program and return to a regular B.S. or B.S.E. degree at any point of time. A student must petition his/her faculty advisor and supervisory committee if he/she is considering taking a sabbatical from the program. Students who are dismissed, or voluntarily withdraw, from the integrated program and return to undergraduate status, are eligible to apply for admission to the stand-alone MS program.
